MisakoMaimus Resident - I concur. DMs would be good if optional, and the default should be "Off". Also, if DMs are off, it should disable sending them as well as receiving them. Otherwise I can see DMs being abused.
Related, indicate your DM on/off status in your profile, so others can see whether or not you can receive DMs.

IF you add direct messaging why not remove inworld names so people don't get messages inworld. It's become nuts how many people message because they see your name on a sexy pic and think they can hook up. If names stay for inworld I say why have DM they will just going to message inworld anyways.

I think this would be very useful. Not only is it one of the few features other sites have that this one doesn't, it might also discourage unwanted in-world IMs. (prolly not lol) Still…I vote a big "Yes" for this feature.
