I was thinking about possible ways to help with the content rating issue, and something Flickr has been doing for a long time came to mind.
On Flickr, users can set a default content rating for all their posts instead of having to select it every time they upload something. In my case, for example, Moderate is always my default. When I know a post can be General, I simply change it manually. Maybe Primfeed could implement something similar — allowing each user to choose their default rating in their account settings. I think this could help prevent accidental rating mistakes and, at the same time, reduce some of the moderation workload for your team.
Additionally, I’d like to suggest less restrictive content ratings and more consideration of the actual context of an image.
For example, I find it difficult to understand why a casual photo of me and my friends at a swimming pool should automatically be considered Moderate simply because we’re wearing swim briefs. There is nothing inherently sexual about that context.
In my country, we have a saying: “If you don’t want to see the stars, don’t look at the sky.”
I don’t know how large the portion of the community that feels uncomfortable with this kind of content actually is, but I do know that a significant part of the SL community sees swimwear, underwear, and the human body very naturally and enjoys expressing themselves that way.
So perhaps the question is: should we cover the entire sky simply because some people are uncomfortable looking up and seeing the stars?
I believe there’s room for a better balance — protecting people who don’t want to see certain content without unnecessarily restricting everyone else.
Just an idea that I thought might be useful.
