In view of the evolution making hashtags clickable, I think that another evolution allowing to have a list of “followed” hashtags would make them even more useful.

I imagine it a bit like subreddits where you can subscribe and have them as favorites, displayed somewhere on the screen to browse everything that has been posted on a specific topic.
