The AI Debate.

This is not really a request but more a note of caution regarding the AI moderation. Recently there have been a spate of posts and comments about whether AI should be allowed or not and every variation in between. Personally I am not a fan of AI with the possible exception of AI generated background but where the principal character is recognizable as a Second Life avatar. That is one debate but not the one that I want to focus on.

Recently I have read and heard complaints from SL photographers both professional and hobby photographers who have had there pictures either rejected as being AI assisted or have had their accounts suspended. Often no AI has been used but they have been put through various picture software such as Photoshop, Gimp etc, etc. This is to me and to so many others artistic freedom and should in my view and of others be encouraged and certainly is no grounds for suspending accounts and rejecting pictures. I also know of many accounts who use AI a lot and have been let through the net.

This inconsistency on making arbitrary decisions whether by the mark one eyeball or with a bot is hurting the Primfeed’ reputation. It is something that really needs addressing and as a matter of urgency. When Primfeed first came to light it was promoted as an alternative and dedicated SL picture/photo repository and had what can only be described as a meteoric rise, and grew rapidly. It came at a time when Flickr was having ants in its pants about Second Life photography and what was acceptable or not and the rise was in part due to this reason.

And now it seems the Primfeed is acting in exactly the same way. I note with interest that Flickr are now more accommodating and that other photographic repositories dedicated to Second Life are starting to emerge. If this is not addressed, I can see a situation where that meteoric rise could turn into the equivalent descent as content producers switch off from Primfeed in search of a more reasonable provider for their works.

Remember also, that we pay subscriptions to Primfeed. And in the words of Richard Branson, the ‘Customer is King’.

Sincerely Crash Landers - Photographer (No AI used) .
